You wonder what is Chickie, Duckie, Turkey or Bunny LOVE?
IMAGINE....you are resting under your favorite purple blanket...not able to verbally communicate....you feel a baby chick cuddling against your cheek... you feel Susan holding your hand..... you bring one hand up to feel the soft, warm baby....you look at Susan and smile... a tear coming down your cheek.....
I often ask “how do you feel when you are with the baby chicks”.....relaxed,
happy, soothed, and calm are common feelings.....
Last week a resident in the memory care unit said that she felt “safe” when she felt the baby chick!
I believe the word SAFE tells it all!!!
During our sessions we are keenly aware that FEELINGS remain despite the losses caused by Alzheimers disease. FEELINGS may be the only way a person understands what is going on. We all communicate by EMOTION, expression and touch. This is why holding a hand, swaying ones arms to music, maintaining eye contact and smiling can convey more than any words. We are always aware of our body language and facial expresssions. We always are aware that everyone should be included in the conversation. It is painful to be talked about as if one isn’t there.
Enjoying a cuddle, exchanging laughter and stories about farm memories, sing and dance to some engaging music coupled with caring conversation make this program engaging, theraputic and FUN!
